Legal requirements

Graduates of a German university who are not citizens of an EU-/EEA-country or Switzerland have almost unlimited access to the German job market and have priority over other non-EU citizens.

All academics with a recognised university degree or a university degree equivalent to a German one can apply for a residence permit for employment. Acces to the German labour market is also possible for their family members (spouses and children) who join them.

To help you get oriented, we have put together some information about the German federal government’s campaign to attract qualified professionals, the process of having international qualifications recognised in Germany, standards for the job application process and successful search strategies.
