Abstract
In this talk we explore written production and written comprehension of relative clauses (RCs) in L1 and L2 Greek. More specifically, written production is investigated by means of written texts, taken from the Greek Learner Corpus. The texts have been systematically annotated via an annotation scheme that includes a variety of properties, such as the syntactic function of the relativizer, the morphosyntacic features of the head noun as well as the subject and the object of the RC among others. Written comprehension is examined by means of a self-paced reading task. We test accuracy and reading times of subject and objects RCs, in which the head noun and of the subject or object of the RC (mis)match regarding their number feature. The production data are described and discussed from a developmental perspective, i.e. the type and properties of RCs produced with regard to the proficiency level of the L2 learners. The comprehension data are discussed in the light of the featural Relativized Minimality (fRM) principle, according to which the intervention effects expected with object RCs can be attenuated, when the head noun and the subject of the RC do not match in their number feature.
The lecture series is organised by the Department of Linguistics and Centre for Multilingualism at the University of Konstanz and the Multilingual Mind project. As in the previous semesters, the speakers will present research findings on multilingualism across different disciplines, in line with the MultiMind project (linguistics, education, psychology, neuroscience, speech & language pathology). The lecture series is aimed at everyone interested in Multilingualism.
