Entry restrictions   

  • Pandemic-related restrictions have been lifted
  • Incoming travelers are no longer required to register their entry via Visit Japan Web, but can do so to expedite the entry process

Entry modalities

  • German citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to a total of 180 days for the purpose of tourism or for business trips without taking up employment or studying.
  • Citizens of the countries listed here also do not need a visa for short stays.
  • Upon entry, a residence permit (“Landing Permission”) as a “Temporary Visitor” is issued at the airport for an initial period of 90 days.
  • An extension of a further 90 days is possible by registering with the residents' registration office responsible for your place of residence and issuing a residence permit in your passport by the local immigration office.

Entry is possible for EU nationals with the following documents:

  •     Passport: Yes
  •     Temporary passport: Yes
  •     Identity card: No
  •     Temporary ID card: No
  •     Children's passport: Yes

Travel documents must be valid for the duration of the intended stay.

ID requirement

In Japan, foreigners are required to have a passport. Foreigners temporarily staying in Japan must carry their passport with them at all times. Foreigners living in Japan must carry their Residence Card. Foreign nationals found without identification may be arrested and detained for several days. There is also a risk of a higher fine.

Visa

  •  Work visa
  •  Student visa
  •  Intern visa
  •  Spouse visa
  •  Working holiday

In order to obtain a work visa - regardless of the exact category - you or your employer in Japan must apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoEs) from the Immigration Office. There the application will be checked and, if necessary, approved.

  •  After the CoE has been issued, it will be sent to you by post.

Then you can apply for your visa at the following diplomatic missions abroad:

The visa processing time usually does not take longer than three working days. Please note, however, that you must apply for the Certificate of Eligibility at the Immigration Office in good time, as it can take two to three months to issue.

Documents that must be presented for the visa application at the Japanese Embassy in Berlin/the Japanese Consulate:

  •  Valid passport
  •  Completed application form / All citizens from the successor states of the former Soviet Union please submit two application forms.
  •  A passport photo (frontal shot, no scans or copied passport photos) that is not older than 6 months and is not damaged / All citizens from the successor states of the former Soviet Union please submit two passport photos.
  •  The original Certificate of Eligibility from Japan.
  •  Copy of the Certificate of Eligibility
