Education for Sustainable Development at the University of Konstanz
In terms of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), sustainable development in teaching at the University of Konstanz is not just about integrating sustainability topics into courses. Rather, it is also about answering the question of what contribution university teaching can and should make to empowering students to actively shape a sustainable transformation.
Central elements in the area of sustainability in teaching at the University of Konstanz are the sustainability qualification N and the support and promotion of the curricular anchoring of sustainability in the subjects and disciplines.
Many scientists at the University of Konstanz not only dedicate their research to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, but also incorporate them into research-orientated courses and innovative, sustainability-oriented teaching formats. As a result, students benefit from the latest research knowledge on current social challenges and can develop and apply sustainability skills in a targeted manner.
The University of Konstanz is committed to further expanding the range of courses with a focus on sustainability and to strengthening sustainability-oriented methods and formats in the sense of Education for Sustainable
Development.
To this end, it offers support programmes for lecturers in integrating sustainability into their own teaching and concrete opportunities for students to participate in the development of teaching in the area of sustainability.
The University of Konstanz is part of a broad network in the field of sustainability in teaching and is involved in the Stifterverband's Transformative Skills for Sustainability network, the Baden-Württemberg ESD university network and the Innovative Teaching Formats for ESD hub of the German Society for Sustainability at Higher Education Institutions (DG HochN).
It also offers specific educational formats on sustainability, such as the climate puzzle for university members and interested members of civil society.

On 8 November 2023, the University of Konstanz was awarded the "National Award - Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)" by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Commission for UNESCO. The jury was impressed by the university's overall concept for education and sustainability.
